Sunday morning, May 2,
1999, after Lime Rock I found that the suet bird feeders in my back yard had been
vandalized. The suet was gone as was one of the feeders. The other one was bent
out of shape and empty. Two of the 3 sunflower feeders were also damaged. There
was a sizable calling card on the lawn that was quickly identified by my
ex-forest service neighbor as having originated in a bear. I notified several
neighbors that they should take care as there was a bear in the neighborhood.
Sunday night I received a phone call from my next door neighbors Greg and Lisa
that the bear was in my back yard! Just outside my back door (~10 feet) the
bear was munching on the remnants of the sunflower seeds that had spilled from
the broken feeders above. He was rather tame and I was no more than 10' away
for some of the pictures. Some were taken through the open kitchen window, some
from the open back door. We were prepared for his return on Monday night with a
video camera, but he hasn't returned yet to my knowledge…
