1998 New England 1000 mile automobile rally.

I have added the article Frank has written for the Jaguar Journal (see link at end of page)! I have also scanned some great photos of the 1998 event and will add more to them soon. It was top-down all the way this year thanks to global warming or el ninio....

Past history, background:

College roommate Frank Filangeri and I are headed out on the 1998 version of the New England 1000 again this year! Last year we were able to finish 1st in class and tie for 1st overall (with 2 points to the 1953 MG-TD team driven by Peter Efros and navigated by his wife Karen). Hope we can do better this time!

As in 1996 and 1997, I will navigate for Frank in his wonderful 1962 Jaguar XKE convertible. Hopefully this year's weather will allow for more top-down driving.

The event is open to sports, racing or GT cars built prior to January 1, 1973. The 1997 event was confined to the state of Vermont, the 1996 course having covered scenic roads from Lake Champlain in Vermont to the coast of Maine and back again.

The 1998 event will start and end at the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport Maine with overnight stays at the Samoset Resort, Sugarloaf/USA and The Balsams in Dixville Notch, staying in Maine and New Hampshire. Visits to the Owl's Head Transportation Museum, a cruise on the windjammer Northwind from Camden harbor (didn't happen), a trip up Mt. Battie in the Camden Hill State Park, a visit to a private Bugatti collection, on to the F.E. and F.O. Stanley Museum in Kingfield, and lunch at Bob Bahre's classic car collection at Paris Hill. Dinner on Wednesday will be aboard the Cafe Lafayette Dinner Train in a restored 1924 Pullman dining car or a 1952 Pullman dome car as the train criss-crosses the Pemigewasset River Valley. Gymkhanas include Greenville Airport, and Oxford. Hillclimbs will include Mt. Washington and Mt. Battie plus a Thunder Road-style mini-road course at Oxford Speedway and some traditional English time trials.
